You can polish an original Nitrided Crank and still retain the integrity of the nitride layer, as the coating penetrates into the metal a bit. VG's need to be built with a 'solid foundation', ie: a nice bottom end with a good, straight, original nitrided, and polished crank. Make sure your main, and rod clearances are consistent as possible, a little looser is even ok for big power. Use patience with plasti-gauges, as they take a bit of time to get the hang of using effectively. You need every bit of precision you can get out of a home garage/plastigauge measurement technique, as new power thresholds with bigger turbos and breather mods put a lot of strain on the bearings!
